How To Clean Schools More Efficiently

Schools are big buildings with a lot of different facilities. They're also used by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of students and teachers each day. All of this can add up to make for a pretty hard-to-clean space. There is no doubt that school cleaning is a challenging job and one to be handled by a large professional team. However, there are also some tips school cleaners can follow to work more efficiently.

1. Assign different cleaners to each type of room.

Rather than dividing the cleaners up by wing or by hallway, assign each cleaner to a different type of space. For example, you can have two cleaners do all of the bathrooms, another two do all of the hallways, and 4 people do all the classrooms. This allows the cleaners to perfect their routine in a certain kind of space. (After cleaning 5 bathrooms, you just get faster at it!) It also keeps the cleaners from repeatedly having to switch cleaners and equipment. They can just take the same equipment and cleaners from space to space.

2. Store equipment close to where it is needed.

Ask the school if your cleaning company can use some of the space inside closets or spare rooms to store the cleaning equipment and supplies. This will keep your cleaners from having to haul it in and out of the building for each cleaning session. Keep all equipment close to where it is needed. For instance, you can keep the toilet wands and toilet cleaner in the closet nearest the first bathroom your cleaners tackle. You can keep the floor waxing equipment in the gym closet. Make sure the school gives you a clear idea of where you can and cannot store things so you don't arrive back to find your items have been moved.

3. Set the space up so teachers and students can keep it cleaner.

The less mess teachers and students create, the less cleaning your team will have to do. Set up recycling bins and trash cans in each hallway so less garbage ends up on the floor. Leave a container of disinfecting wipes in each classroom so teachers are more likely to wipe down their own desks and counters. Make sure furniture is pushed against walls, when possible, so you don't have to clean dirt out from behind it.

Cleaning a school is no small task. With the right approach, though, it does not have to be overwhelming.
